Thank you for your interest in Northwestern University's Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences PhD Graduate Program!
The Graduate Program on-line application is now open! Applications and materials are due by December 31st of each year. You may also download the Admissions Handbook which has all the information you will need including requirements, application checklist and frequently asked questions.
Please note the following:
- We only admit students for the Fall Quarter - please do not apply for any other quarter.
- We do not have a traditional MS program - do NOT apply as an MS student as your application will not be considered. We have an MS to PhD Program that is by invitation only. The department selects a few stellar applicants who are not chosen for the PhD program and invites them to participate in the MS to PhD Program. This is a one year full-course load track for unfunded students. After one year, these students are re-evaluated and may be asked to join the PhD Program. Should a student not be asked to continue, they may leave with the MS degree (provided they finish all requirements). This is by invitation only, you may not apply to this.
- Admission decisions are handled centrally in the IEMS department. Please do not contact individual faculty regarding research or teaching assistantships. All first year students are provided fellowships for their first year of study. The department then assigns RA/TA positions after the first year. Faculty contact should be limited to research related questions - nothing related to admissions or funding.
Applications to Northwestern University's Graduate School, and by extension to this department, must be submitted electronically (while all supplemental materials must be sent to the IEMS department). In addition, all fees must be submitted electronically as well - no checks will be accepted.
Please visit the Application Procedure page for more information about the on-line application process. As part of a new initiative to better support prospective graduate students, the McCormick School of Engineering has launched the Graduate Admissions Tracking System (GATS) an on-line supplement to the University's application system . Applicants may use this system to check the status of their application materials. Please use the application number provided to you by the Apply Yourself application system (NOT your PIN) and the email you used in your application.
If you have any questions that you cannot find answers to on the website, please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail (gcoord @ iems.northwestern.edu).

Coordinator of Graduate Student Life.
