Application (On-line Only)   

You can only apply on-line via The Graduate School. Detailed instructions are provided in the on-line application regarding submission of the application fee and supplemental application materials. You must have a credit card in order to apply on-line. The application fee $75 for all applicants and there are no application waivers available regardless of circumstances.

Materials Submitted On-Line

  • On-line Application ($75 application fee) - please make sure to fill out the application completely as this will ensure your application can be reviewed fully. Make sure to mark a specialization (not Industrial Engineering) so that it can be assigned to the proper faculty for review. If you do not indicate a specialization(s) your application may not be reviewed properly.
  • One (1) copy Statement of Purpose. This should be a comprehensive document detailing your experience (education, research, etc) as well as your future goals.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendations. If you submit them on-line, you do not need to submit them through the mail. We will accept more rec letters but make sure they are from strong references. There are no forms for recommendations - the format is at the discretion of the author. 
  • One (1) copy of current Resume or Curriculum Vitae

Materials Mailed to Department   

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (signed originals of each). Please note that if your recommendation letters have been submitted online (through ApplyYourself), you do not need to submit paper copies to the department - however, electronic copies are the preferred method.  We will accept more rec letters but make sure they are from strong references. There are no forms for recommendations - the format is at the discretion of the author.
  • Official college transcripts (2 each) from ALL universities in which you have received credit (even if you did not receive a degree - this includes study abroad).

Materials Submitted to The Graduate School

  • Official test scores for GRE (Institution code 1565 and no department code)
  • Official test scores for TOEFL (when required), and TSE (when required) (Institution code 1565 and no department code)
Optional Materials   
  • Publications (can be submitted on-line during the application process in the writing sample upload section)
  • Copies of Fellowship Offer letters (NSF, etc) - if applicable

Please Note:

  • Supporting documents for the on-line application should be sent directly to the IEMS Department. Materials sent to The Graduate School will not reach us.
  • Please clearly mark your name on all materials you send. We recommend you do not send materials until you submit your application electronically.
  • Please send all materials together as this makes processing faster and decreases the risk of lost mail.

Application Progress   

To check on the status of your application materials, you may visit the McCormick Graduate Admissions Tracking System (GATS). You may only check on your application materials after you submit your online application via Apply Yourself. You are not in the GATS system until you submit your application. If you have any questions about the status displayed on GATS, please only contact Adam Cebulski at gcoord @ iems.northwestern.edu. Note: Your materials will take up to 7 business days to process, you must be patient during this.

Quarter of Entry   

Our curriculum is designed for students entering in the fall quarter only - no exceptions will be made.

When to expect an admissions/financial aid decision   

Admissions decisions are typically made around March for applicants. Please do not contact us regarding the status of your decision - we will contact you. You may track your application using the GATS System April 15th is the deadline for those individuals who have been offered financial aid to accept our offer. A few additional financial aid offers may be made around April if all of our financial aid has not been committed by that time.

Application and Materials Deadline  

The application deadline for Fall admission is December 31st. The applications must be submitted on-line by this date. All of your materials (including rec letters, scores, etc) must be in by this date. You may not receive full consideration if your materials are late.

International Summer Institute   

The International Summer Institute is administered by The International Office. The purpose of the program is to help international students make the transition to life in the United States prior to starting school in the Fall. Outstanding applicants will be nominated for placement in the program. There is limited space in the program, so not all nominees will be accepted into the program. The benefits to the student include:

  • Improve your spoken English for your studies, teaching, social situations
  • Make friends with your peers and American graduate students
  • Learn about American culture and your new hometown
  • Get help with practical matters such as finding an apartment, shopping, banking, transportation, etc.
  • Receive a stipend equivalent to one month of TA fellowship
  • Spend six weeks adjusting to your new life before starting studies
